In order to protect the data of its 3 billion users globally, Google is reportedly working on a novel privacy feature for its web browser, which conceals users’ IP address – helping to stop prying eyes from tracking your device across the web.
According to the details, the Bleeping Computer – a website covering technology news – was the first one to spot this development on GitHub.
If the new update is implemented, this feature will route users’ internet traffic through a proxy server owned by Google.
This process will render the user’s IP addresses, which serve as unique identifiers for tracking online activity, invisible to select domains, and enhance IP protection.
The Github description states, “Chrome is reintroducing a proposal to safeguard users against cross-site tracking via IP addresses. This proposal involves a privacy proxy that anonymizes IP addresses for qualifying traffic, as described above.”
It is pertinent to mention here that IP protection isn’t a universal solution for all privacy concerns, particularly since the traffic would be routed through a Google-owned proxy server. In the event of a security breach on Google’s servers, a potential hacker could gain access to a significant amount of your personal information.
